2007 "Derek Oldbury" GAYP National Tournament

The "Go - As - You - Please" National Tourney will be held in Las Vegas at the Plaza Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada from July 23 through 27. Many of the best players in the world will be there.  Make your plans now to be a part of the biggest tournament of the year. The arrival date is Sunday, July 22 and play will take place from Monday through Friday, July 23-27. The "Arthur Niederhoffer" youth event (for 21 and under) will take place July 21 & 22.

The Plaza Hotel at the entrance of Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas is a fine hotel with many restaurants, a swimming pool, fitness center, jogging path and tennis courts. The Plaza has given the ACF a special deal for tourney entrants. A total of only $45 a day from Sunday, July 22 through Thursday, July 26. On Friday and Saturday when almost all the good hotels go over $100, the Plaza has given us a special rate of $75 total. The above rates include the use of a large playing room for the tournament.

The Plaza has requested that the ACF collect part of the above rates to pay for the playing room. Here's how it will work: Each entrant will pay the ACF a one time fee of $60 to take care of the payment of the playing room for the five days of the tournament. That amount will be paid by the ACF to the department that handles the playing rooms. Another hotel department will charge tournament entrants only $29 a day plus tax for the sleeping rooms Sunday thru Thursday and $65 plus tax on Friday (or Saturday).

In other words, tourney entries will be paying a total of only $45 a day for their rooms (which includes the tourney room). from Sunday through Thursday and a total of $75 a day for Friday and Saturday. (Two persons can share the same sleeping room). This is a deal that is hard to beat anywhere and we thank the sales staff at the Plaza for their cooperation.

Be a part of the ACF GAYP National. Arrival will be Sunday, July 22, and play will start Monday the 23rd. Rooms are limited so make your reservations now by calling 1 (800) 634-6575. To get the special rate, you need to mention the " U.S. CHECKERS CHAMPIONSHIP " . A deposit of $33 will hold your room. A major credit card will be required to hold the reservation or you can send a check in early enough to hold your reservation. If you have any questions, call the tourney promoter, Gerry Lopez, at 1(951) 695-2499 or email him at: prof237@netzero.net

This is the same thing but posted earlier:
Players will pay $29 plus tax to the hotel from Sunday night through Thursday night and $65 on Friday when prices go way up in all of Vegas. In addition players will pay $12 a day to an ACF representative to pay for our playing room. Two persons to a room are allowed at the $29 p.t. rate. Family & friends of checkers will pay only $29 plus tax from Sunday through Thursday and $65 p.t. on Friday & Saturday. The rate of $29 p.t. for visitors also includes two persons to a room. $15 extra is charged for each person beyond two to a room. Please note that the Plaza hotel does not accept Saturday arrivals on the 21st, but visitors wanting to arrive early at the Plaza may come Friday the 20th with weekend room rates of $65 plus tax.

We highly recommend that reservations be made as early as possible since rooms are limited at that price. It takes a one-day deposit to hold your room. You may cancel your reservation and get your deposit back if you notify the hotel in advance.

Make sure that you mention that you'll be there for the Checkers Championship to get the special rate. Let's make this one of the biggest tournaments ever in order to show the Las Vegas hotels that it's worth it to have checker tournaments there! The number for reservations is 1-800-634-6575. The Plaza is a great hotel in a great location. It has a swimming pool, tennis courts, and plenty of restaurants that cater to all tastes. Food is very reasonable also. Any questions, call Gerry Lopez at (951) 695-2499.

Entry fees will be $50.00 (Masters), $30.00 (Majors), and $20.00 (Minors).  ACF Membership is required to enter all divisions, and may be paid at registration.  Registration will take place Monday morning from 8:30 - 10:30 followed by a business meeting.  Format will be 13 two-game rounds (2 rounds Monday, 3 rounds Tuesday through Thursday, two rounds Friday) scored by game.  Referee will be Tim Laverty.

Reminder   You can get a shuttle (small bus) that will carry your luggage and yourself from the airport to your hotel for about $10..00 (one way) and you can also book a return ride when you buy your ticket. The shuttles are just outside the airport terminal and run all the time. You cannot miss them as they are lined up all the time just outside from where you get your baggage. When leaving your hotel for a return flight your ticket will have a number for you to call 24 hours in advance of your departure. You simply call the number to verify your return ride. Any taxi will also take you for about $20.00 one way. There are tons of taxi's in Vegas but a bit more expensive. Also there is a tram that runs from hotel to hotel that you can take to sight see for about $2.50 . If you are downtown you can take the elevated monorail that begins at the MGM Grand and runs to different hotels and ends at the Sahara for about $8.00. Word is they hope someday to have the monorail run from some of the hotels to the airport.  (2 players arrive on Friday and depart on Friday, sharing room cost pay $260.00 each  / 7 days = $37 per day or 3 roommates split $600 = $28.57 per day)
